# Pages

The pages a Portal is made of — the ones you create, and the ones it comes with.

A Portal is a set of pages. Some you create; others every Portal has from the start.

| ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [Custom pages](/portals/building-a-portal/pages/custom-pages.md) | The pages you make — **Home** to begin with, then whatever else you need. Each is either a web page you build from sections, or a full-page asset gallery. |
| [System pages](/portals/building-a-portal/pages/system-pages.md) | Signing in, registering, requesting access, resetting a password, getting help. They already exist; you change how they look and what they ask for. |

Both appear in the page selector at the top of the builder, under those two headings.

## Is this page published?

Every page in the selector carries a small dot, and it answers one question: does what visitors see match what you have in the builder?

| Dot                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           | Means                                                                           |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Solid green** <img src="https://2536208400-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fqsq2dR7Fjagf5eTifWZx%2Fuploads%2FJ8eNrCIzgmgrm8MdpGVb%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=b32a3319-dbbc-40d7-af3c-572066414251" alt="" data-size="line"> | Published and up to date. Nothing has changed since the last time it went live. |
| **Hollow orange ring** <img src="https://2536208400-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fqsq2dR7Fjagf5eTifWZx%2Fuploads%2FCKobQ8iPqB5mMM1YYTbA%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=4eca828f-6a80-41d6-b756-0455f0a03fa0" alt="" data-size="line"> | Unpublished changes. The live page is older than the one you are editing. |

The dot is per page, not per Portal. A Portal can be live and perfectly healthy with one orange page in it — that simply means you edited that page and haven't published since.

Hover a dot for the detail:

* **Updated** — when the draft last changed, and who changed it. Shown only while there are unpublished changes.
* **Published** — when the live version was published, and by whom. If nobody has published it yet, this falls back to when the Portal was created and who created it.

<figure><img src="https://2536208400-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fqsq2dR7Fjagf5eTifWZx%2Fuploads%2FGPlfb14IiS7k9NHZUmLd%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=b2a9c45a-18a6-49b4-bb9c-b912e3d594d3" alt=""><figcaption><p>Hovering a page's dot: when the draft last changed, and when the live version was published.</p></figcaption></figure>

That pairing is the useful part: on an orange page the tooltip tells you both what visitors are currently getting and how far ahead your draft has run.

{% hint style="info" %}
The dots answer a different question from the Portal's own status. A Portal that has never been published shows **Publish portal** in the top bar and nothing is public yet, whatever the page dots say. Once it is live, **Publish changes** pushes the pages you have edited.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
Changes only reach visitors after you select **Publish changes**.
{% endhint %}
