# Custom pages

The pages you create yourself, and the kinds you can choose from.

A new Portal starts with a **Home** page. Everything else is up to you — an about page, a set of brand guidelines, a gallery of product photography, a page per campaign.

## The three kinds of page

| Type | What it is | Use it for |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Web Page** | A blank page you build from [sections](/portals/building-a-portal/sections.md). | Anything you are composing yourself — a story, a set of downloads, guidelines, a landing page. |
| **Dataset page** | A page that renders one row of a dataset per URL. | Giving every press release, job or product a page of its own. See [Dataset pages](/portals/portal-settings/datasets/dataset-pages.md). |
| **Asset gallery** | A page that is a gallery, edge to edge. | Browsing a body of assets, where the gallery *is* the page rather than a block on it. |

The difference matters after you create the page. A **Web Page** gives you the full builder — add sections, arrange them, style them. An **Asset gallery** is configured rather than composed: the builder's other panels are turned off, and everything happens in [Gallery settings](/portals/building-a-portal/sections/gallery/gallery-settings.md). A **Dataset page** is built from sections like a web page, but its content comes from whichever row the URL names.

If you want a gallery *and* other content on the same page, make a **Web Page** and add a Gallery section to it.

## Create a page

1. Open the page selector at the top of the builder.
2. Select **Add new page…**
3. Choose the **Type**.
4. Fill in the fields, then select **Add**.

| Field     | What it is                                                                     |
| --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Name** | What the page is called in the builder and in navigation. Up to 60 characters. |
| **Slug**  | The page's address, for example `about-us`. Up to 60 characters.               |
| **Title** | The page title. Up to 60 characters. |

The **slug** is the part worth thinking about: it becomes the page's URL, and changing it later breaks links people already have. Name and title can be changed freely.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Dataset page** only appears in the **Type** list once the Portal has at least one dataset, and asks for the dataset it reads from.
{% endhint %}

## Managing a page

Each page in the selector has a menu:

| Action                      | What it does                                                                                                                    |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Edit** | Change the name, slug or title — and switch a page between a web page and a dataset page. |
| **Clone** | Duplicate the page with its sections — the quickest way to make a second page that resembles the first. |
| **Visibility** | Decide who can see it — everyone, particular [audiences](/portals/portal-settings/audiences.md), or people matching conditions. |
| **Archive** / **Unarchive** | Take a page out of the Portal without deleting it. |
| **Delete**                  | Remove it permanently.                                                                                                          |

## Visibility

**Visibility** answers *who can view the page?* Leave it open to everyone, restrict it to audiences, or set conditions on user attributes that a visitor must match.

This is what lets one Portal serve several groups — partners see the partner pages, press see the press pages, and neither is aware of the other.

{% hint style="info" %}
A page restricted to an audience nobody belongs to is invisible to everyone. If a page seems to have vanished, check its visibility before checking anything else.
{% endhint %}
