# Thumbnail metadata

Show up to five metadata fields under the asset name on each thumbnail.

Where [Metadata](/portals/building-a-portal/sections/gallery/gallery-settings/metadata.md) decides what visitors read *after* opening an asset, **Thumbnail metadata** decides what they read *without* opening one. The fields you pick here print under the asset name on every thumbnail in the gallery.

Use it for the one or two facts that tell someone whether an asset is the one they want — a product code, a market, a usage right. Anything more and the card stops being scannable, which is why the panel caps it.

## Adding fields

**Add field** opens the same pool of fields as the Metadata panel — product fields plus every metadata field in the project — with a search box over it. Select one and it joins the list.

* **Up to five fields.** At the cap, **Add field** disappears and the panel says how many of the five are used.
* **Drag to reorder.** The order in the list is the order on the thumbnail.
* **×** on a row removes that field; **Remove all** empties the list.

With nothing selected the panel shows **No metadata fields yet**.

## Hide file name on thumbnails

By default every thumbnail is captioned with the asset's file name. Turn this on to drop it and show only the fields you selected — worth doing when file names are internal, unreadable, or simply less useful than the metadata beside them.

{% hint style="info" %}
If a field you'd selected is later deleted in the DAM, or the Portal is copied into a project that doesn't have it, the field quietly drops out of the list the next time you open this panel. It never counts against the five.
{% endhint %}
