# Navigating a Portal

Moving around a published Portal.

## The header

Your logo, the Portal's navigation, and — depending on how it is set up — search, a language switcher and the visitor's own menu.

Navigation appears as a top bar or a sidebar rail, set by the Portal's [layout](/portals/building-a-portal/layout.md). Menus with more items than fit collapse into a **More** menu, and into a full menu on a phone.

## The page outline

On layouts that include it, the outline lists the headings of the current page so visitors can jump between its parts, and highlights where they are as they scroll.

What appears there is decided in the builder: any heading can be kept out of it with the hide option in the [text level](/portals/building-a-portal/inline-editor/text-levels.md) selector.

## Search

When [global search](/portals/portal-settings/general.md) is on, the header carries a search box. It needs at least three characters, and offers **Recently viewed** alongside matching **Content**. Visitors can choose to **Include text content** to search the words on pages as well as asset names.

This searches the Portal. Searching inside a gallery is separate — see [Gallery](/portals/viewing-a-portal/sections/gallery.md).

## Languages

If the Portal has more than one published language, a switcher appears in the header. Visitors pick their own; anything untranslated falls back to the Portal's primary language.

## The visitor's own menu

Signed-in visitors get a menu under their avatar with **My shared links** and **Log out**. Visitors who came in with the shared password appear as **Guest**.
