# Sections

How the sections you build behave for the people visiting your Portal.

A visitor meets your Portal as a sequence of sections — the same ones you added in the builder, in the order you placed them.

Most simply present what you wrote: a hero, some text, a set of category cards. A few do something when a visitor touches them, and those are the ones worth understanding before you build with them, because they change how much content a page can carry without becoming a scroll.

## Sections that do something

| Section | What a visitor can do |
| ------------------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [**Gallery**](/portals/viewing-a-portal/sections/gallery.md) | Browse, search, filter, sort, preview, download, share. |
| **FAQ** | Expand a question to read its answer. Variant C can also show more items on demand. |
| **Agenda** | Collapse and expand a day. |
| **Tabs** | Switch between panels of content. |
| **Slider** | Move through a carousel. |
| **Search** | Type a query and go straight to results. |
| **Media** | Play a video, or an audio track. |
| **Downloads** | Take a file away. |
| **Reviews** | Read a rating, shown as stars. |
| **Color palette** | Read the exact colour values. |
| **Categories** | Follow a card to wherever you pointed it. |

Everything else — Hero, Header, Banner, Text, Stats, Steps, Incentives, Info panel, Do's and don'ts, Typography, Icons and logos, Contact, Pricing, Directory, Blog, Release notes — is read rather than operated, though several of them link onward.

## Lists that visitors can filter

Many sections are built on a **list**, and a list connected to a dataset can carry a filter bar of its own — pills, a dropdown or a searchable list, above the rows. You decide whether to offer it, and which fields it filters on.

That applies to **Release notes**, **Blog**, **Directory**, **Agenda**, **Contact**, **Downloads**, **Pricing**, **Reviews** and more. See [Connect to dataset](/portals/portal-settings/datasets/connect-to-dataset.md).

A grouped list also arrives under headings, and its rows can appear in the page outline so a long one is navigable from the sidebar.

## What a visitor never sees

* **Hidden sections.** A section you hid in the builder stays in your draft and out of the Portal.
* **Draft dataset rows.** An item set to Draft is invisible to visitors even where the section's criteria would include it.
* **Section names.** What you call a section in the Sections panel is for you.
